The heat from straw of local farmers has replaced Russian gas
On May 25th 2016 the opening ceremony of new boiler house took place in Trebišov. The new boiler house will provide heat to the whole town from straw, but also wooden biomass.
The original gas boiler houses, which were situated directly in residential settlements of the town, will be gradually closed and heat production will be moved to the town periphery. From the residential areas will be removed air pollution sources (smoking chimneys), what will ensure the healthy and clean environment for the town citizens in the future. The modern concept of town heating is replacing heat production from Russian natural gas by local biomass. This on the one site will lower heat production costs and thus the costs of Trebišov inhabitants and on the other site it will create new “green“ jobs, when utilizing local biomass sources – mainly agricultural biomass. And right in the Trebišov is placed the biggest energy source utilizing straw as fuel in Slovakia.
The project is unique also thanks to its complexity – part of it presents growing of fast growing plants. This year, in the surroundings of Trebišov have been already planted energy grass (Miscanthus) and fast-growing trees.
The entire project of building new energy source of heat and related investment costs reach the value of 9,5. mil. Eur, of which 3,5 mil. Eur presented support (financial contribution) from Norway Grants and State Budget of SR.
Utilization of renewables is part of the ongoing EU energy policy, as confirmed by the newest strategy document „EU strategy for heating and cooling“ launched in February 2016. This strategy considers district heating and cooling systems as most effective way to utilization of renewables potential. In Slovakia is already 16% of heat produced by burning of biomass (mainly wooden biomass) in district heating systems. The investor and operator of new boiler house in Trebišov is company Trebišovská energetická, s.r.o., partner in the project SINBIO and daughter company belonging to the portfolio of the holding company Národná energetická, a.s.. This energy group is operating today several district heating systems utilizing renewables (Hriňová, Hnúšťa, Žarnovica, Poltár, Tlmače, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Medzilaborce, Trebišov).
